There is such a scientist who has been focusing on quartz glass for many years and has made an indelible contribution to the development of quartz glass in China. He is Gu Zhenan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Gu Zhenan, born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province in November 1936, is a professor-level senior engineer, doctoral supervisor, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and graduated from East China Institute of Chemical Technology (now East China University of Science and Technology) in 1958, majoring in silicate engineering. Member of the 863 New Materials Field Functional Materials Expert Group, Chief Engineer of National British Glass Quality Supervision; currently a professor and doctoral tutor of the China Academy of Building Materials Science, and the chief expert of the Quartz Glass Key Laboratory. In 1988, he was awarded the honorary title of the country’s young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions by the Ministry of Personnel; in 1991, he enjoyed the special government allowance of the State Council; in 1997, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Academician Gu Zhenan has been engaged in the research of special glass and optical fiber for a long time. He systematically studied the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of rare earth elements in quartz glass and optical fibers, and took the lead in carrying out chemical vapor deposition doping (DCVD), solution doping and oxyhydrogen flame melting in my country—two steps of electrofusion molding The research work of method technology has completed more than 20 national scientific research tasks, and successfully developed ultra-low expansion quartz glass, radiation-resistant quartz glass, cerium-doped quartz glass, ultraviolet filtering quartz glass, quartz glass for “Sanqi” project and rare earth. A batch of new materials with international advanced level, such as quartz optical fibers, provide key materials for key projects such as lasers, electronics, weapons, and aerospace, and achieve significant social and economic benefits.
Academician Gu Zhenan formulated the technological development plan, industrial policy and national standards of my country’s quartz glass industry, guided the construction of the product quality assurance system of key enterprises, established the only quartz glass research institute in my country and the National Quartz Glass Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center to promote The development of China’s quartz glass industry. Currently, he participates in the strategic consulting project of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and is responsible for the research on “Sustainable Development Strategy of Non-metallic Mineral Resources for Building Materials”, as well as research on topics such as “Resource-Saving and Environmentally Friendly Building Materials Industry” and “Development Strategy of my country’s Green Building Materials Industry”, focusing on cultivating graduate students .
Academician Gu Zhenan studied the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of rare earth elements in quartz glass and optical fibers, and obtained D-F electronic broadband transitions of various elements with strong ultraviolet absorption and visible fluorescence conversion characteristics, as well as upconversion fluorescence, double frequency and optical amplification properties; researched chemical vapor doping deposition, solution doping and hydrogen-oxygen flame melting-electrofusion molding two-step process technology, solved the technical problem of refractory glass preparation; successfully developed ultra-low expansion quartz glass and rare earth A batch of new materials such as silica fiber. It has won national and provincial awards for 8 times. “Quartz glass for laser technology” won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1985, and “irradiation-resistant quartz glass” won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1996. Published more than 70 academic papers; instructed more than 30 master, doctoral and postdoctoral students.
